A new beginning
For the past ten years I've been a pop artist. I've created simplified, distinctive work, exploring combinations of colours in interlocking shapes. My style has gradually evolved, as I increased my colour palette, whilst simultaneously decreasing the number of colours in each work. From humble, colour-clashing beginnings, I have almost come full circle to more harmonious colour choices.
Throughout it all, my basic painting style has almost always remained the same. However, this tightly controlled style has began to feel more of a restriction than a pleasure. To counter this, I added texture to my work, at first roughening up my simple shapes, before going on to incorporate more heavily-textured backgrounds.
In the last month of 2009, at the end of a period that saw few new works, things changed. A long conversation and a music video opened the first cracks. They reminded me of all that I had stripped away ten years ago. They reminded me of what else I was capable of and they reminded me of the many other things I love. They re-awoke an excitement and an interest that had slowly gone dormant.
The week proceeding these revelations saw the shell I had imposed on myself crack and crack further. I am now at the start of a new chapter. After a decade of control, it is now time to break the rules, to pack away the instruction book and throw caution to the wind.
I don't know where my work is going to go, yet this is not a problem because, for the first time in a long time, I am really enjoying it. I can't wait to see what tomorrow is going to bring.
Thank you everyone that has stuck around over the years. I hope you like what comes next. |
